The Krakatau Islands were volcanically active for more than 350,000 years (Maudslay, 1901). During this time, several species of the endemic plants and animals evolved. Numerous islands with active volcanoes have developed in the vicinity of the islands of Java and Sumatra. The area is relatively remote and therefore relatively little research has been conducted.
The most recent detailed studies have been conducted by S.R. de Jong (de Jong, 1952; de Jong & Schipper, 1979) in the eastern area of the Krakatau Islands, and by H. Dickschmann in the western area, both on the island of Sangihe.
